Although many people believe that fashion designer’s world in involved only in creating an idea for a new garment, they are wrong. Fashion designing is all about bringing new fashion ideas to the attention of the public. So here are some clues to understand what fashion designing actually is.

The preliminary step of the fashion designer may vary according to his or her own instincts; some may prefer to start off with story boards that are accompanied with sketches while others may like to play with sewing dummies and adding pieces of clothes to it. No matter what method is used, the principal behind the first step is to come up with a new design or the basic prototype.

Making a rough model comes next in line and this is commonly known as the toile. Americans refer to it as the muslin and it is a rough model made out of inexpensive materials such as calico. It comes in handy when determining the necessary drapes and other similar hanging features of the design.

Once the toile is perfected, card patterns are created. These card patterns are useful for assembling and making sure that the pieces fit together perfectly.

After making relevant changes and approving the card pattern, the designer can start off with finishing the garment. In this step, the designer selects the materials, colors, and other accessories such as buttons and zippers. The fashion designer can either complete it by himself or assign a competent dressmaker to finish it up. Once the garment is completed, the designer is able to approve it for a collection, modify or anything else.

If the designer is up for a fashion show, he plays a major role in it too. From selecting the models, arranging the presentations to determining the price of each garment, everything is on his shoulders.
