SkyDrive a cloud storage service launched by Microsoft way back in 2007. Now Microsoft has renamed their SkyDrive to OneDrive. Soon Microsoft will make publicity based on name OneDrive and will migrate their SkyDrive product to OneDrive.com. This news has came out as Microsoft has launched it’s first promotional video on Youtube. Service will soon use OneDrive and Microsoft says that “will continue to operate as you expect and all of your content will be available on OneDrive and OneDrive for Business respectively as the new name is rolled out across the portfolio.”
This name change is due to a trademark case by British Sky Broadcasting Group (BSkyB). According to Microsoft OneDrive reflects their recast of cloud service as ‘ One place for all your documents. ‘. Microsoft accept that it was tough for them to change SkyDrive name to OneDrive but they will continue to improve their service. In their blog post Microsoft’s GM Ryan Gavin says that ” Of course, changing the name of a product as loved as SkyDrive wasn’t easy. We believe the new OneDrive name conveys the value we can deliver for you and best represents our vision for the future. We are excited about what is to come, and can’t wait to share more. ”
Also regarding the switch Ryan Gavin says that ” For current users of either SkyDrive or SkyDrive Pro, you’re all set. The service will continue to operate as you expect and all of your content will be available on OneDrive and OneDrive for Business respectively as the new name is rolled out across the portfolio. “. Currently SkyDrive.com is still active and OneDrive.com shows the preview that site will be active soon and offers the email sign up which will inform you when will be the service online.
